The Muslim Ummah has lost much of its dignity, yet too often we try to regain it by seeking the approval of the very people before whom we want to be respected.
We compromise our deen to fit in. We chase what others possess. We measure strength by their standards and seek acceptance through disobedience to Allah سبحانه وتعالى.
But dignity cannot be recovered by abandoning its source.
Allah سبحانه وتعالى says:
“But honour, power and glory belong to Allâh, His Messenger (Muhammad ﷺ), and to the believers...”
True izzah begins when a Muslim stops depending on creation for his sense of worth and begins living according to principles that make him more dependent upon Allah سبحانه وتعالى.
Muslim Founder Brief
A daily briefing on Muslim ownership, responsibility, and disciplined building.
1. Stop Desiring What People Have
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
The more desperately you need someone's wealth, opportunities, praise, or approval, the more power you give that person over you.
Contentment creates independence.
A Muslim should be grateful for what Allah سبحانه وتعالى has given him while striving for more through halal means. He does not need to envy what others possess or shape his life around impressing them.
2. Build Strength and Self-Sufficiency
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“The upper hand is better than the lower hand.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 1427
“The strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than the weak believer, while there is good in both.”
Sahih Muslim 2664
Strength is not limited to physical ability.
A Muslim should strive to become capable. Learn useful skills. Work. Earn halal income. Build businesses. Provide for your family. Become someone who can contribute rather than constantly needing to take.
There is dignity in being able to give.
The goal is not wealth for status. It is strength that allows you to serve others without becoming dependent upon them.
3. Seek Allah's Pleasure Above People's Approval
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“Whoever seeks Allah's pleasure through people's displeasure, Allah will suffice him against the people. And whoever seeks people's pleasure through Allah's displeasure, Allah will leave him to the people.”
Jamiʿ at-Tirmidhi 2414
This may be the foundation of dignity itself.
You cannot possess real ʿizzah while constantly changing your principles to remain acceptable to people.
If approval requires compromising your deen, the price is too high.
Muslims do not regain dignity by becoming more like those they admire. We regain it by becoming more faithful to the principles Allah سبحانه وتعالى gave us.
True dignity is not something people give you.
It is something you develop through obedience, strength, independence, and reliance upon Allah سبحانه وتعالى.
