5 Steps to Achieve Your Goals

Everyone wants to achieve their goals, and most people have good intentions. But very few actually know how to get there.

It is like a fisherman who knows the right technique to cast the net. Success comes from learning and applying the right strategies, not simply wanting the catch.

Whether you want to start a business, become a Hafidh of the Qur'an, learn Arabic, or pursue another meaningful goal, there are five steps that can help you hold yourself accountable.

Muslim Founder Brief

daily briefing on Muslim ownership, responsibility, and disciplined building.

The first step is to commit to the goal.

Stop treating it as something you would "like" to do. Make a decision. There is a major difference between being interested in something and committing yourself to it.

Then make Istikhara.

Ask Allah سبحانه وتعالى for guidance. You may desperately want something that is not good for you, while something you hesitate about may contain tremendous khayr.

Seek guidance, then move forward.

Once you have committed, write down exactly what you will do.

Do not only write the outcome of the goal, such as "Master Arabic."

Write the plan for how you will get there:

"Study Arabic for 45 minutes every morning, five days per week."

Define the goal.

Define the actions.

Define the timeline.

Ambiguous goals produce ambiguous effort.

Measure What You Actually Control

Once the plan exists, take action and track it.

Your accountability system should measure what you actually control: your actions.

Did you study today?

Did you make the sales calls?

Did you memorize your pages?

Did you complete the work?

Track it daily, or at minimum weekly.

The purpose of tracking is not simply to record whether you achieved the final outcome. It is to make your daily execution visible.

You cannot control every result.

You can control whether you showed up and completed the actions required of you.

Make the Cost of Inaction Visible

Finally, define the consequences of failure.

Write down what happens if you continue breaking commitments to yourself.

Another year without the business.

Another year unable to understand Arabic.

Another year without completing your Hifdh.

Accountability becomes more powerful when the cost of inaction becomes visible.

Goals do not change lives by themselves.

Consistent execution does.

What system has helped you keep promises you make to yourself?
