Dig Deep Enough to Teach Water

Many of us give like people digging shallow holes across an entire beach. A fundraiser here. A campaign there. A cause this month. Another cause next month. But one deep hole produces more water than twenty shallow ones.

There is goodness in responding to needs. Emergencies must be supported. The hungry must be fed. But sometimes we confuse movement with impact.

I was once teaching a young boy about focus. I asked what would happen if he used the same effort to dig twenty small holes across the beach instead of one deep hole. He said he probably would not reach water.

That is how many of us give. The same effort scattered produces no depth.

How a founder should give

A Muslim founder should think about giving with the same seriousness he thinks about business. Not just emotion. Not just reaction.

Choose one or two major objectives and give consistently enough that the impact compounds.

  • A Qur'an school
  • A masjid project
  • A family in hardship
  • A waqf
  • A scholarship fund

Keep another portion for urgent needs, but let the larger portion dig deep.

Sadaqah that reaches the akhirah

The Prophet taught us that when a person dies, his deeds end except three, and one of them is recurring charity. Sadaqah is not only relief. It can build institutions, protect families, educate children, and keep reward flowing after we are placed in the grave.

  • Deep giving builds institutions that outlast you.
  • Shallow giving touches the sand but reaches no foundation.
  • Recurring charity compounds into lasting reward.

What would change in your giving if you designed it to reach water instead of only touch sand?
