If You Lose Everything, Can You Build It Again?

“Just show me the market” is powerful. But it is only half the story.

When ʿAbdur-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf رضي الله عنه arrived in Madinah, Saʿd ibn al-Rabīʿ رضي الله عنه offered him half of his wealth. He declined and simply asked where the marketplace was.

He began trading butter and dried milk, continued going to the market, and eventually earned enough to marry. This account is authentically established in Sahih al-Bukhari.

ʿAbdur-Raḥmān رضي الله عنه later became one of the wealthiest merchants among the Sahabah.

But his success was not magic.

He had already been a merchant in Makkah.

He brought something with him that could not be taken away during the Hijrah:

He had knowledge of trade, experience in buying and selling, an understanding of markets, and the ability to recognize opportunities.

Madinah simply gave those skills a new environment in which to flourish.

This is whybusiness and financial knowledge matter so much.

Money can disappear. A business can fail. Assets can be lost. But valuable skills, knowledge, discipline, and judgment remain with you.

You may have to start again, but you are not starting from zero.

One of the greatest forms of economic independence is therefore not simply owning wealth.

It is knowing how to build it.

The real question is not how much wealth you have today.

It is:
