Justice Is Bigger Than Politics

At a time when injustice seems to dominate the world, it is easy to think that justice belongs only in the hands of politicians, judges, and world leaders.

Islam teaches otherwise.

While rulers will answer before Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) for those under their authority, every one of us will also stand before Him alone.

You may not be able to stop every war, every corrupt government, or every act of oppression.

But you can establish justice within the circle Allah has entrusted to you.

Justice Begins With Four Relationships

Justice in Islam begins with four relationships:

  • Justice towards Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) by worshipping Him alone.
  • Justice towards yourself by protecting your faith and soul.
  • Justice towards other people by giving everyone their rights, whether family, customers, employees, or even enemies.
  • Justice towards all living beings through mercy and responsibility.

Islam builds this upon four timeless principles.

First, Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) never commits injustice and has forbidden oppression for mankind.

"Indeed, Allah does not do injustice, even as much as an atom's weight."

(Surah An-Nisa 4:40)

Second, when people commit injustice, they do not wrong Allah. They wrong themselves.

"Indeed, Allah does not wrong the people at all, but it is the people who wrong themselves."
(Surah Yunus 10:44)

Justice Starts With You

Third, justice must be upheld even when it is against yourself or your own family.

"...Stand firmly for justice... even if it be against yourselves, your parents, or your relatives." (Surah An-Nisa 4:135)

Finally, injustice has levels. The greatest injustice is shirk.

"Indeed, associating partners with Allah is a tremendous injustice."

(Surah Luqman 31:13)

Every unpaid wage, broken contract, dishonest sale, betrayal, and abuse of power is an injustice.

But the greatest injustice is denying Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) His exclusive right to be worshipped.

Justice does not begin in parliament.

It begins with every believer giving every right to its rightful owner.

What would change if Muslims became known first for the justice they practiced within their own responsibility before demanding it from the world?
