The Fatwa Procurement Department

Some Muslim founders have mastered fatwa procurement.

They find a ruling for the beard, another for music, another for handshakes, another for riba, and another for celebrations. One by one, every uncomfortable command is given an exception until their entire lifestyle can be justified through isolated opinions.

When Fatwas Become a Permission Slip

The problem is not seeking legitimate Islamic scholarship. Muslims should ask qualified scholars when they do not know the ruling.

The problem is searching for rulings according to what we already want to do.

A person may collect individual opinions until the result is a lifestyle that completely contradicts the broader principles of Islam, while telling himself that everything is acceptable because "a scholar said so."

That is not sincere pursuit of knowledge. It is using knowledge to serve desire.

Love of Allah Must Change How We Live

We should never reduce Islam to finding the easiest ruling for every situation.

If we truly love Allah سبحانه وتعالى, that love should appear in our choices, our business practices, our families, our clothing, our celebrations, and our daily conduct.

The purpose of Islamic knowledge is not to help us escape obedience. It is to help us understand how to obey Allah سبحانه وتعالى correctly.

There is a difference between following a genuine scholarly opinion and shopping for a ruling simply because it permits what we already wanted.

Seek Guidance, Not Just Permission

A Muslim founder should approach scholars with humility, asking, "What does Allah want from me?" rather than, "Can you find me a way to justify what I want?"

The goal is not to assemble enough fatwas to make our desires permissible.

The goal is to submit our desires to the guidance of Allah سبحانه وتعالى.

How would our lives change if we stopped searching for permission and started searching sincerely for guidance?
