The richest people may arrive empty handed

Many Muslims see a wealthy Muslim and immediately say, "Allah has blessed him with barakah." Perhaps. But barakah is not what you see. Barakah is what you do not see.

Barakah is whether that wealth brought a person closer to Allah سبحانه وتعالى or further away. Barakah is whether the money was earned through halal means when haram opportunities were available. Barakah is whether the wealth funded masajid, students of knowledge, families, and charitable causes, or whether it was spent on excess, status, and desires.

A person can have millions in the bank and be bankrupt in the akhirah. And another can have far less wealth yet arrive before Allah سبحانه وتعالى carrying mountains of good deeds because he earned and spent what he had correctly.

What will be asked on the Day of Judgment

"The feet of the son of Adam shall not move from before his Lord on the Day of Resurrection until he is asked about five things: about his life and what he did with it, about his youth and how he spent it, about his wealth and how he earned it and spent it, and what he did with what he knew."
(Sunan At-Tirmidhi 2417, Hasan)

Notice that wealth will be questioned twice. How it was earned. And how it was spent.

That alone should make every Muslim think differently about success.

What barakah actually is

  • Barakah is wealth that helped a person wake up for Fajr, perform Hajj, and support his parents.
  • Barakah is money that strengthened the Ummah instead of distracting from the purpose for which a person was created.
  • Barakah is what reaches the scale of good deeds, not what remains in the account.

The true measure of wealth is not what enters your bank account. It is what enters your scale of good deeds on the Day of Judgment.

Closing thoughts

The world celebrates a person with millions who has nothing for the akhirah. But the Book of Allah celebrates a person with little who earned it correctly and spent it wisely.

Every dinar and dirham is a test. The question is not whether you have it, but what you do with it.

What would change in your life if you evaluated every financial decision by the answer you would give on the Day of Judgment?
