Wealth is not proof that Allah سبحانه وتعالى is pleased with someone, just as poverty is not proof of greater piety.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ sought refuge from both the trial of wealth and the trial of poverty.
Wealth can lead to arrogance and attachment to the dunya. Poverty can lead to envy, desperation, and obsession with what others possess.
Both require taqwa.

Zuhd Is About the Heart
Imam Ahmad رحمه الله was asked whether someone with 1,000 dinars could still be a zahid. He said yes, provided he does not rejoice when his wealth increases or grieve when it decreases.
Zuhd is not simply having less. It is refusing to let what you own control your heart.
Uthman ibn ʿAffan رضي الله عنه and ʿAbdur-Rahman ibn ʿAwf رضي الله عنه were wealthy, while other Sahabah رضي الله عنهم possessed far less. Their righteousness was not measured by their bank accounts.
Measure Attachment, Not Possessions
Wealth requires gratitude. Poverty requires patience. Both require taqwa.
The real question is not simply how much do you have?
It is how much does what you have control you?
