The Missing Ingredient in Modern Leadership

Modern business requires more wisdom than business did in the past. A single decision made by a founder today can impact thousands of employees, millions of customers, entire communities, and sometimes even nations. Yet many Muslims have adopted modern definitions of wisdom that miss something essential.

A merchant centuries ago certainly needed wisdom, but the consequences of his decisions were often limited. A poor decision might affect his family, a few employees, or a small number of customers. Today, the scale is incomparably larger. The greater the influence, the greater the need for wisdom.

The problem is that many have defined wisdom as intelligence, experience, strategic thinking, or emotional maturity. While these qualities are beneficial, Islam gives us a deeper understanding.

Allah سبحانه وتعالى says:

"He grants Hikmah (wisdom) to whom He wills, and whoever has been granted Hikmah has certainly been given much good." (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:269)

What is Hikmah

Ibn Abbas رضي الله عنهما explained Hikmah as knowledge of the Qur'an, including understanding what Allah allows, what He forbids, what is clear, and what requires deeper understanding. The Qur'an is not merely guidance for prayer and fasting. It is comprehensive guidance.

  • Guidance for leadership
  • Guidance for wealth
  • Guidance for trade
  • Guidance for justice
  • Guidance for decision-making
When Muslims remove the Qur'an from business, they should not be surprised when wisdom disappears from their decisions.

The scale of modern decisions

Every founder spends his day making decisions that affect other people. The more people your decisions impact, the more you need Hikmah.

  • Decisions about employees affect families and livelihoods.
  • Decisions about products affect millions of customers.
  • Decisions about wealth affect entire communities.

Perhaps this is why Allah سبحانه وتعالى described wisdom not as a small blessing, but as "much good."

What would change in our businesses if we sought wisdom from the Qur'an before seeking it from the marketplace?
